Makalu Region Trekking

Makalu trekking in eastern Nepal is protected by the Makalu Barun National park and conservation project, Established in 1992,it covers 2330 sq km. Among the 16 mountains in the park, it is home to Makalu, the fifth highest mountain in the world (8463m).It is formally a restricted area of eastern part of Nepal. It is extended to five major ecological zones of lush, tropical Arun valley, dense forest, fir and alpine meadows. The trail ranges from 850m to 5000m offering impressive natural scenery and the main focal point of makalu. Plants are of all major ecological zones; tropical, sub-tropical, temprate, alpine and sub-alpine are found here.Having a wide range of altitudinal and climatic variations, the Makalu Barun area offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna.

Makalu Region trekking starts with 35-40 minute scenic flight of Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and hike the trail from Khandbari to Num, then cross over the Arun River into the conservation area. The traditional way is to hike in from the roadhead, but the bus from Kathmandu takes close to 18 hours and the walk to tumlingtar takes at least two full days. There is also the Salpa Pass route between Tumlingtar and the Everest region hitting the trail there about a day from Lukla. This "backdoor" to Everest from Tumlingtar to Lukla takes at least seven days. From Tumlingtar, the trail mounts another ridge and continues on to Khandbari (3600), Chichila (6500), and Num (6000).
