Everest Base Camp Trek Permits

In the Everest region trek, there are three permits that are applicable to trekkers. These permits include the regular Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit, and Trekking Information Management system (TIMS) card.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit is a necessary permit for all trekkers entering the Sagarmatha National Park, where Mount Everest is located. This permit allows you to explore the park’s beautiful nature and supports conservation efforts. You can get the permit at the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu or at the Park Entrance Gate in Monjo. Remember, you must have this permit with you when trekking in the region. The permit costs NPR 3000 per person.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit: The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit is a new permit introduced after making changes in how the Everest region is managed. This permit allows trekkers to explore the beautiful Khumbu region. Foreign trekkers need to pay NPR 2000 per person directly to the Khumbu local government to get this permit. Keep in mind that you cannot get this permit in Kathmandu. If you’re flying into the region, you can obtain it in Lukla. For trekkers coming from Jiri or Salleri, the permit can be obtained in Monjo.

Trekkers’ Information Management System: For trekking in the Everest region, obtaining a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card is mandatory. The TIMS card system is in place to monitor and manage trekkers across different trekking areas. Its primary purpose is to enhance the safety and security of trekkers while also providing valuable data for tourism management and rescue operations. As part of the process, trekkers must register their personal information and trekking details, including their chosen routes and itineraries, with the relevant authorities. This registration system helps identify trekkers during emergencies and facilitates effective communication between trekkers and rescue teams. The cost of the TIMS card is Rs. 2000 for all trekking routes.

Gaurisankar conservation area permit: For those who want to do the classic Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek, there’s an extra permit called the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Project Entry Permit. This permit lets you enter the conservation area and helps protect the environment. To get it, you can go to the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu, and it costs NPR 3000 per person.
